Meta's smart glasses are getting a new shortcut to call and text without saying 'hey Meta'. While the company's AI assistant has become more capable, some users still find the frequent need to say 'hey Meta' awkward in public spaces. Now, Meta has introduced an update that reduces the reliance on voice commands. A new 'quick connect' feature allows users to create a one-touch shortcut for frequently used communication actions, such as making a phone call or sending a text to a specific contact. This feature is similar to the 'action button' on the Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses, but with more limited functionality. Users can designate a specific contact and choose their preferred method of reaching them, whether it's WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, or their phone's native calling or messaging app. The same one-touch press and hold shortcut can also be used to send photos and videos shot on the glasses. Additionally, Meta has previewed updates for third-party apps that could allow developers to set their own wake words for the glasses when using their services. While it's unlikely that users will be able to completely avoid saying 'hey Meta', the quick connect update offers a handy way to make messaging more discreet.
