Loaded Tater Tot Skewers | Tater Tot Kebabs Recipe (2024)

These loaded tater tot skewers are so yummy and they’re so easy to make. This is such a fun and simple appetizer recipe!

I know I just posted a potato recipe last week, but I had lots of leftover toppings, so I figured I might as well use them up and do another one! You might notice that this recipe is pretty similar to the easy baked potato skins I made last week. And yet so different! Who would have thought that tater tots would make such an awesome appetizer!?

And they’re delicious. Maybe too delicious. I had 4 loaded tater tot skewers for lunch yesterday. Perhaps not the most calorie conscious choice, but YUM. I dipped them in sour cream and each bite was like heaven on a stick. I’m not sure why, but I find that everything tastes better when it’s on a kebab?!?

Even my 9 year old loved them. We ate the leftover skewers with dinner last night and she was like, “Wow, mom, these are really good!?” They’re picky little eaters so she was surprised that she liked it. You know, because of how fancy they are. *wink*

But it’s not surprising at all. Cheese? Yum… Bacon? Yum… Potatoes? Yum… It’s melted cheesy goodness! I was inspired by the amazing recipes over at The Country Chic Cottage, Made With Happy and Homemade Interest. So easy to make and soooo yummy!

The full printable recipe is at the end of this post, but here’s what you’ll need:

  • Tater Tots
  • Bacon Bits
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • Green Onions
  • Sour Cream

Maybe it’s because tater tots are so delicious? They’re like comfort food. If you’ve never added toppings to your tater tots, now is a great time to give it a try.

Start by baking the tater tots according to the package directions. I baked mine at 425F for 28 minutes, flipping them half way through.

Wait a few minutes for them to cool off enough so that you can pick them up without burning your fingers.

Then put the tater tots on the skewers. I put 6 tater tots on each skewer, but you can make them as big as you like! Or as small as you like – 6 tater tots is a actually very generous serving.

Lay them on a parchment lined baking sheet. I definitely recommend using parchment paper so nothing sticks. The clean up is SO EASY with parchment paper!

Then sprinkle them with grated cheddar cheese.

Then sprinkle them with bacon bits. You can cook up bacon instead of using bacon bits if you like, but I always keep a bag of real bacon bits from Costco in my fridge, and it makes recipes like this sooooo easy!

Finally, sprinkle them with green onion. It’s up to you whether you want to add the onion before or after baking the skewers again. I added half my onion first, and then added a little more after they baked.

Bake them for another 5 to 8 minutes. I baked mine for 8 minutes and I found that it was a little much. I personally prefer for the cheese to be melted, not browned. So next time I’ll bake them for about 6 minutes.

As long as they’re bacon bits made from real bacon, the bacon bits will crisp up a little bit in the oven too.

Don’t they look delicious!?

I think the best part is that you can add your favourite potato toppings to them. You can make them with jalapenos, ham, or wouldn’t they taste amazing with all your favourite taco fixings?!

I kept things super simple and just served them with sour cream, just like I’d do with baked potatoes. But ranch dressing is another great dipping option.
