You were smart to hedge your bet. The Insight’s spiritual 2-seat successor, the Honda CR-Z, was available with a 6-speed manual transmission (or a CVT). I drove a manual 2000 Insight for 7 years and a manual 2006 Insight for 13. The steel-bodied CR-Z’s gas mileage was so inferior to the gen-1 Insight’s that I never bought one of those, even though I thought the CR-Z looked great.

And how are the tiny side windows even legal these days for something that’s not a Ferrari, especially for good side vision at night? Very little air in a black car on a warm day. Imagine a very large person trying to squeeze out of one of these in a fire these after a rear-ender jammed both doors. Not pretty.

The Atlis’s body is unworkable. The flat surfaces will “oil can” (bend, wobble) as you drive. A large flat area is always going to drum and vibrate. Needs complete redesign, these flat panels will make an unbearable noise on a rough road. Where are the interior air conditioner outlets? There are no weather seals on the frunk or doors. Lights, mirrors, reflectors are not SAE/DOT approved. No crush zones for impact protection. Charging network does not exist. Sorry, no investment here. Atlis fails to drive during the demo. (September 27, 2021, 05:08pm MST) In an interview by Andy Blye, Reporter for bizjournals.com, Andy reported that problems will keep the XT prototype from operating properly during the demonstration on Sept 28th. “Hanchett warned that the Atlis team had recently broken several of the gearboxes on the prototype and that the vehicle may not move”. Seems to me that they may be trying to use aluminum gears with a hard coat finish to save money. Hardened alloy steel gears are difficult to machine from a billet, require a heat treating process and are expensive. A large prototype gear can easily cost $50,000 or more. Probably saving where they shouldn’t have. Mirror Laws, similar in every US state:

The responsible thing to do with PHEVs is plugging them in at every opportunity. Unfortunately, some studies have shown that many PHEVs owners do not plug them in. This means that owners and their “green” PHEVs are in fact consuming more fuel than an equivalent non-PHEV vehicle – batteries and electric motors are heavy. The planet is indeed on fire and it’s obvious that PHEVs are not an answer or the best practice. What’s more, BMW’s own fuel consumption figures show that the 45e consumes more fuel than the 40i. Full EVs on the other hand…

]]>I find the take on the X5 45e in this article odd. For many people, this SUV is the perfect compromise. Personally, I work from home, and my daily runs around town are 20 miles or less, far less mileage than the electric-only range. Having the extra power for my longer weekend trips and vacations to be just what I need. Admittedly, if your daily commute were quite long, the use of the gas engine would offset the PHEV benefits. But this is unlikely to apply to that many people. Add in the fact that in the States, this car is eligible for a $7500 tax credit (and even more in some states that offer additional incentives), and the 45e becomes an easy choice.
]]>I drive a SRT and love it. Yes its noisy, and a very tight suspension, but I love how it feels like a perfomance vehicle. I would get a Trackhawk, as you side there are a few still on lots, but I’m not spending over $100K for any car, no matter who makes it. And as to BMW, everytime I’ve gotten into an X5, for example, have been very underwhelmed by the interiors, and nothing special of the exteriors for that matter. I would prefer a Uris, M type or Porsche as ulternatives. YOLO.

I’m probably going keep it for a long time because I’m afraid I won’t be able find anything else as fun to drive for the price. If you want something exciting to drive and practical this is the car. My only complaint is that on going through rear tires every 10,000 miles. Probably my fault.

Meanwhile, my screen reboots at least once every 2 weeks and the screen can become very unresponsive. ]]>This is happening on the 5.3 engines as well. I bought a new 2020 Silverado RST and a valve spring broke driving home from hunting. On the side of the road for 1.5 hours. It has been in the shop for 10 days now. It had 1031 miles. They are still waiting to fix and further check for any additional damage to the pistons or cylinder wall. According to a highly knowledgeable mechanic friend, this has been happening to the 5.3 engine for at least 6 years and GM still hasn’t addressed it.

]]>I just purchased a 2020 Trackhawk and after 1500 miles can honestly say it is by far one of the funnest cars I have ever driven. An ultimate sleeper, the true embodiment of a red light bully. The only con I can relay at this point is the gas mileage. But, let’s be honest, that is more my fault than that of the vehicle. You just can’t keep your foot out of it. It is a symphony for all the senses. The sound, the fell, even the smell of burnt fuel is so evident when get out right after a spirited drive it makes you want to huff the exhaust pipes. I haven’t had it on a track yet but that is in the near future. If you have the chance to own, or even just drive one once, do it. You won’t regret it.

]]>FCA has a tough act to follow with the current Grand Cherokee. They could get by just updating the Pentastar V6; giving it direct injection for a little better economy and power. Or they could offer the turbo 4 cyl offered in other Jeeps. That would address the mediocre fuel economy problem. Instead, the next generation is a completely new design which is risky. I would sure like to see it.

We called it “vapor-ware”, referring to hardware or software that was announced but was not yet available. These announcements were designed to discourage companies from buying currently available products from competitors. By promising wonderful capabilities, if you would just wait for their next great thing, companies like IBM would make purchasing currently available products from their competitors seem foolish. Now we continually get announcements about battery improvements that discourage buyers from buying currently available EVs. Since many of these announcements never materialize please stop teasing buyers with these “vapor-battery” announcements.
