AVATAR's Johannes Eckerström Reflects on Learning from METALLICA
In an insightful interview with Radioactive MikeZ, host of the 96.7 KCAL-FM program "Wired In The Empire," AVATAR's vocalist Johannes Eckerström shared his thoughts on the band's relationship with METALLICA and the upcoming collaboration. Eckerström, whose band will open for METALLICA at four stadium shows in Europe, expressed his admiration for the legendary heavy metal act.
"We have watched and learned from METALLICA for a long time," Eckerström stated. "There is no AVATAR without METALLICA. Our sound is influenced by many bands, but the roots can be traced back to BLACK SABBATH and THE BEATLES, and then you have AT THE GATES. But it's METALLICA that has been a major source of inspiration."
Eckerström's journey with AVATAR began with a personal story. "John [Alfredsson, AVATAR drummer] broke a leg skiing and was bedridden for a bit when he was 12," he recalled. "He was gifted a stack of CDs to pass the time, and he heard 'Load' and 'Reload.' That's when he decided to play a Tama drum kit and start a band with Jonas [Jarlsby, guitar]."
When asked about his expectations for performing with METALLICA, Eckerström focused on the band's iconic stage setup. "I've been curious about how they manage to play with all those people behind them," he said. "Our tour manager this summer was also the stage manager for METALLICA, so I've been learning from their experience. It's about managing focus and not losing concentration."
Eckerström also highlighted METALLICA's approachability and their support for opening acts. "They have made a point of spending time with the openers, being very cordial and friendly," he noted. "They take time out of their day to connect with bands like us, which shows their roots in the scene. Despite becoming bigger than most of us, they still embody the spirit of the thrashing kids from the scene."
In a separate interview with "Wired In The Empire" in August 2024, Eckerström discussed his favorite METALLICA album. When asked to choose between 'Ride The Lightning' and 'Master Of Puppets,' he chose the former. Eckerström explained his reasoning by comparing it to the heaviest song ever recorded, emphasizing the importance of tempo and drive in heavy metal music.
AVATAR's latest album, 'Don't Go In The Forest,' was released on October 31 via Black Waltz Records. The band is currently touring the U.S. with ALIEN WEAPONRY and SPIRITWORLD, and they have upcoming tours supporting IRON MAIDEN and METALLICA, further solidifying their place in the heavy metal community.
