Think you know who funded A Plus’s 2024 campaign? Think again. Kwame Asare Obeng, widely recognized as A Plus and the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has set the record straight on a widely circulated rumor. In a candid interview on UTV’s United Showbiz on October 4, 2025, he categorically denied claims that his parliamentary campaign was backed by Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent figure vying for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position. But here's where it gets controversial: A Plus didn’t just deny the funding—he flipped the narrative entirely.
“Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, my brother, but let me be clear: he didn’t sponsor my campaign,” A Plus stated firmly. Instead, he revealed that it was he who supported Agyapong’s campaign that year. “I was the one mobilizing funds for his primaries. If Kennedy is listening, he knows exactly what I’m talking about,” he added, leaving no room for ambiguity.
And this is the part most people miss: A Plus, running as an independent candidate, not only funded his own campaign but also emerged victorious in the December 7 parliamentary election. With a staggering 14,277 votes out of 36,026 valid votes, he decisively defeated Naana Eyiah Quansah of the NPP (11,637 votes) and Yawson Mohamed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) (10,112 votes).
But here’s the question that’s bound to spark debate: If A Plus was financially supporting Agyapong’s campaign while running his own, how did he manage to secure such a landslide victory without external backing? Could this be a testament to his grassroots support, or is there more to the story than meets the eye?
